I honestly wish there was a 'bigger' word for it, because that's what I hope you can hear.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">And at the risk of minimizing some contributions (which I in no way want to do ever), I still feel it's worth mentioning the over-and-above from certain individuals.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">Colin - you really outdid yourself this year in going in for 'the ask', gathering corporate donations towards the meal and the event itself! That was a lot of footwork!!!! Not to mention how much you were on your feet on the day of!! (Enjoy your auction item bid win.)</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">Lillian - you can 'stand the heat' in the kitchen like nobody else we know! You and your whole kitchen team were giving it your all. And that you stay to the very, very end, washing up and putting away AND getting back at in first thing on Sunday morning for our Haiti Leftovers Lunch....those are 'last push' efforts that are nothing less than heroic!</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">Brian - it's your heart and passion and positivity that leads the whole thing in the first place. You are the one gathering the auction items and also going in for the ask at the corporate level. Thank you for keeping Haiti on our radar in ways that are a perfect blend of love and tenacity.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">I've just got to say, as Highview's Missionary in Residence, it is such a humbling thing to be part of a family of people who love like you do. Over the years, no matter what role I've held, a common question when meeting other church leaders is, "How big is your church?" I've learned to answer with a question. "By what measurement?" Because, if I take in what happens when it comes to weekends like this, regardless of Sunday morning attendance or any other metric...we are ENORMOUS! </div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">So, yes, every single one who came together in any way, </div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="color: #e69138; They are the two youngest children of Pastor Abdon and Madame Lumide, and they are with all their Grammas and Grampas a lot. Their parents are part of the spectacular gathering of superheroes who care for our senior friends, along with the Leadership and Staff Teams, all labouring together to make the world a brighter place.</p><p>I call them spectacular for good reason. They are caring for the vulnerable midst their own vulnerability. Haiti, as we all know, is a chaotic and often dangerous place to live. Yet these amazing people have welcomed an even grater level of complexity into their lives by choosing to embrace these seniors who would otherwise be homeless, protecting them from all manner of harm and indignity.</p><p>I also think they're kind of spectacular because they took this picture, and then even sent it along for us, even after admitting that they have repeatedly dissuaded their children from playing with the scooters. To me that gives us a peek into real-time parenting, children being children, and an ability to find the fun and humour in the midst of demanding ministry. Also, maybe it's just me, but I'm thinking our seniors find it somewhat entertaining. So there's that. </p><p><b>On Sunday, February 11 at Highview (10:30 a.m.)</b> we'll be highlighting these spectacular folks, their incredible work and the inspiration they can bring to our own light-shining here in Canada. We'll touch on Isaiah chapter 60 with the proposition that every believer can participate in Isaiah's vision of ridiculous hope by releasing the grace of God to bring light to dark places, right now.</p><p>Then later this month we'll really ramp it up with our <b>Haiti Dinner and Silent Auction, Saturday, February 24.</b> We've been doing this since 2008, and it's always a pretty big deal. </p><p>Our fundraising goal is $10,000.00, and we've got a lot of dedicated volunteers lined up to help make it happen.</p><p>Hope you can join us.</p><p>Questions? Because, as far as our partnership with Auberge des Vieillards in Pignon, Haiti is concerned, the wall is where is all started.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">The construction part, that is. Even before the wall, there was a vision. A vision to care for vulnerable seniors with no place to go. That came from a Haitian Pastor named Abdon, and it was a long, long time ago. In 1988 he began his theological studies in Cape Haitian, and would often see the elderly begging in the streets back and forth on his way to class. The images stayed with him, wouldn't shake off, until it became a part of the very DNA of his leadership, and how he would inspire the church he and his wife Lumide would lead together in Pignon. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Between the first inklings of that vision, and the eleven seniors now receiving care, there was a parcel of land. And it needed a wall. Without the wall going up first, whatever was kept or built on that parcel of land would be 'free game' for theft and destruction. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Highview, along with Teams from other Canadian churches, helped build that wall.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgC9xph0ooQXoDhPIxmUnp4eaM7k3e0zFRNjrEysfUatrnd93xFh1kHRMqQ5KDfywJpazmLLz6uXIoCayz0yoxO0a3cpWFRPyMWja7X0YHHbk1LWwBPoEMZiuTb-4YYXelzSQ_CYGewfBcZz_2o-u1WZ0ik6cirHSKnfC_E4V006So5uvMBQe_KF7KNyRTZ/s2448/Haiti,%20Senior's%20wall%20(1).jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2448" data-original-width="2448" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgC9xph0ooQXoDhPIxmUnp4eaM7k3e0zFRNjrEysfUatrnd93xFh1kHRMqQ5KDfywJpazmLLz6uXIoCayz0yoxO0a3cpWFRPyMWja7X0YHHbk1LWwBPoEMZiuTb-4YYXelzSQ_CYGewfBcZz_2o-u1WZ0ik6cirHSKnfC_E4V006So5uvMBQe_KF7KNyRTZ/s320/Haiti,%20Senior's%20wall%20(1).jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">In fact, a good-sized stone that got dislodged from Highview's foundation in a spring-thaw flood back in Canada, has been incorporated into the wall that now surrounds the Auberge des Vieillards property.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Oh yes. font-size: large;"><i>or check out www.hcckw.ca.</i></span></div><p>But what does that have to to with the book pictured here?</p><p>Well, there's a story for that.</p><p>I'm not swimming anymore. Not as part of my regular fitness routine at least. There are reasons, and it's all good. But I only mention it here because it's an important part of the story, and it's going to end up in Haiti.</p><div style="text-align: left;">The thing about swimming, or any other thing you do regularly enough, is that your meet people and they become your 'that' friends. In this case, my 'swimming' friends. The folks I don't have any other common orbits with, but when we see each other in the change rooms or in the pool or in the jacuzzi after our swim, we're all friendly and finding out enough about each other, and what makes the world interesting because they're interesting. But all of this is, of course, in quick conversations as we are getting in and out of the pool and drying our hair and stuff.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">Maggie and Joy (not their real names) are two of my swimming friends.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">Hang on. This will actually get us to Haiti, I promise.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">On my last day of swimming, I didn't know it would be my last day of swimming, so I didn't really say a proper goodbye. It's like that, actually. Because sometimes you don't even run into each other to chat. But I had given Maggie my business card at one point when she expressed interest in my pashmina, and it led to the conversation about my times in Thailand. Yes, we'll get to Haiti.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">So six months after my last day of swimming I get a call from Maggie. She wants to have a tea and invite Joy. How lovely. But I explain that I am heading into a rather demanding fall and it would be best if we set this up as a Christmas tea, perhaps, if that's not too far off to make such plans. It wasn't.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">So early in December, once my head stopped spinning from the jetlag return from Thailand, I sat for tea in Maggie's lovely home, and she and Joy and I found out oh so much more about each other than ever we could in the quick conversations at the pool.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">For example. Maggie, who is a very spry lady in her 90's, had many years ago spent two years as a nurse at the Hospital Albert Schweitzer at Deschapelles in Haiti. (Told ya.) </div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">What? Tell me more. So she did. With great respect she talked about a man named Larry Mellon who, being born into wealth, was drawn into so much more than the 'entitled' life could offer, and ended up a medical doctor in one of the poorest countries of the world.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">As the name of the hospital suggests, Dr. Mellon had been inspired by the similar kind of medicine practiced by Albert Schweitzer in Africa, driven by the shared desire to "find the place of maximum need." It's what led Mellon to build his hospital in the Artibonite Valley, a place deserted by other doctors due to the hopeless conditions in which the inhabitants lived. </div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">And now an aside, because more dots are connecting for me. A quote from Brian Stiller's book "Find a Broken Wall" (2012) where he encourages Christian leaders (and all of us for that matter) to consider our 'job search' a little differently.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><i><br /></i></div><div style="text-align: center;"><i>Instead of searching for the good places, </i></div><div style="text-align: center;"><i>rewarding salaries and benefits, </i></div><div style="text-align: center;"><i>popular</i><i> communities and nice people, </i></div><div style="text-align: center;"><i>look for rundown, bankrupt communities </i></div><div style="text-align: center;"><i>in need of someone to lift and lead (29).</i></div><p style="text-align: left;">This is exactly what Mellon did.</p><p style="text-align: left;">Near to the end of our Christmas tea, I realized I wanted to know more about this intriguing man and his medical mission in Haiti. So I asked if ever there was a book published or anything else I could read. Maggie easily lent me the book pictured above, published in 1964. I have not been disappointed.</p><p style="text-align: left;">I'm not finished the book. And I'm still learning so much. The hospital still exists, but I've only started to poke around to find out more. If you're also interested, here's a possible link to information today: <a href="https://www.tellerreport.com/news/2023-02-17-in-the-spotlight--in-haiti--a-hospital-in-a-rural-area-plagued-by-gangs.ry-ShfaTj.html">Current information on the hospital</a>. If nothing else it will give us all a perspective on how the situation in Haiti today is affecting everything.</p><p style="text-align: left;">And it all comes back to what's happening at Highview on Saturday, February 24.</p><p style="text-align: left;">We aren't directly connected with Dr. Mellon's hospital. But we are partners with Auberge des Vieillards (Inn for the Elderly) in Pignon. The seniors and disabled residents there are also living midst the turmoil of a country in prolonged chaos. It's another 'broken wall' if you will; another 'place of maximum need.'</p><p style="text-align: left;">We want to help. </p><p style="text-align: left;">We hope you'll join us.</p> <p></p>Highview To Haiti!http://www.blogger.com/profile/12907494050434465059noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4462398394490566280.post-17114088240857558372023-12-21T12:28:00.000-05:002023-12-21T12:28:47.358-05:00Our Deep Gratitude at Christmas<p> </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; It was a good decision. </span></span><br /><br /><strong><span style="font-size: 32px;"><span style="font-family: tahoma, verdana, segoe, sans-serif;">Travel to Haiti Feb. 22 - March 2</span></span></strong><br /><span style="font-family: tahoma, verdana, segoe, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: 14px;">Plans came together quickly for a return trip to Gens de Nantes (GDN) to do a midterm evaluation of Haiti: Education, Agriculture and Community Mobilization Initiative, RD146. </span><span style="font-size: 14px;">Eric Klarholm from Macoun, Sask joined me in Toronto and we travelled to GDN together. The following day Eric went by motorcycle over the low mountains to Pignon. I began visiting beneficiary families participating in RD146. I had a schedule for these visits along with plans to meet with the directors of the school, as well as Herlynda and Hernso. No one had thought to mention in our planning that the very weekend I arrived was the big GDN AEM church thanksgiving celebration. Marilia, director of the school, was busy shopping for food supplies at the Friday market in Dajabon and the Saturday market in Wanamint. Then when she returned with all the food, she was responsible for a team of women who were prepping the food and cooking for the many choirs that would come and sing, visiting speakers and other notable guests. It was a huge event. Then there was Hernso; he developed a toothache and needed to travel to Cape Haitian as there was no qualified dentist in the city of Wanamint to care for fillings if needed. Herlynda was around but somewhat busy looking for reports that I had requested. </span></span><br /><span style="font-size: 14px;"><span style="font-family: tahoma, verdana, segoe, sans-serif;">What to do - in event of such changes - just be F.A.T. - flexible, adaptable and </span></span><span style="font-family: tahoma, verdana, segoe, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: 14px;">teachable, trainable - and come up with a new plan! There were some teachers available, so they accompanied me for some visits. On Saturday, I started out on my own, when Hernso did not appear, and soon I had several children accompanying me. Sure, they knew who had a "gardens of faithfulness" in their yards, so off we went! Over the week in GDN, I was able to visit 51 families, children and teachers, most of whom were part of the Initiative and a few who showed interest and were starting on their own. </span></span></div></td></tr></tbody></table></td></tr></tbody></table><table border="0" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" style="border-collapse: collapse; Claude has learned to be a tailor but not only that. He is an entrepreneur with a heart for sharing Jesus in his workplace. Claude teaches his students how to sew and how to make backpacks. Claude has a very basic building for a school but mostly they set up outside. He has one sewing machine, but when a student graduates from his class he helps that student with the purchase of their own machine. <br />Claude loves Jesus and he loves God's Word. He is studying in the 4 year Bible Training program at La Jeune. Claude sells his packsacks to schools and to students. He will be teaching a class this summer in La Jeune. He hopes to raise up students there who will make backpacks for the schools and students in that community. <br />When you pray for Haiti, pray for young adults who desire to make a difference as followers of Jesus and humble servants within their communities. </span></div></td></tr></tbody></table></td></tr></tbody></table><table border="0" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" style="border-collapse: collapse; min-width: 100%; width: 100%;"><tbody><tr><td style="margin: 0px;" valign="top"><table align="left" border="0" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="m_2092242947065473891mcnBoxedTextContentContainer" style="border-collapse: collapse; min-width: 100%; width: 100%;"><tbody><tr><td style="margin: 0px; padding: 9px 18px;"><table border="0" cellspacing="0" class="m_2092242947065473891mcnTextContentContainer" style="background-color: #404040; border-collapse: collapse; min-width: 100%; width: 100%;"><tbody><tr><td class="m_2092242947065473891mcnTextContent" style="color: #f2f2f2; font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 14px; line-height: 21px; margin: 0px; padding: 18px; text-align: center; word-break: break-word;" valign="top"><span style="font-size: 18px;"><strong>Praise and Prayers</strong></span><div style="text-align: left;">Gift toward the Seniors Home in Pignon – to purchase the stove (like large bbcue), propane tanks, connections and cost of installation. The month of November, as a church we remembered those who live under severe or very high levels of persecution. The first Sunday of the month we are to remember to pray for our brothers and sisters who are living in extreme situations that we really cannot comprehend. And then there are those believers who are from backgrounds where their very lives will be snuffed out if they speak the name of Jesus. I am so thankful for a friend, now with Jesus in heaven, Sharon B., who drew my attention to praying for peoples who are of Muslim backgrounds and live in Muslim nations. (Sharon was the finance administrator for EMCC and a member of my local church back in the day). I recently found a paper copy of an email from Sharon. It was 2002, Day 4 of the 30 days during Ramadan and the Muslim prayer focus, and we were reminded to pray for the Komering of Indonesia. This people group had only a handful of believers in a population of over a million people. Since 2002, I have become passionate about prayer for those who suffer persecution and for the peoples who live within Muslim nations. God is working in amazing ways through the prayers of thousands of believers around the globe who desire to see "your kingdom come, your will be done here on earth as it is in heaven." Why am I thankful then? I am so grateful for Sharon who passed on her passion to pray for those who would not easily have opportunity to hear the good news of Jesus and to pass that on. I am thankful for the way that God is drawing many to himself through dreams and visions and miracles. I am thankful for our freedom here in Canada to live for Jesus, to share the good news and to be able to financially assist in the places where faith costs the most. </div></td></tr></tbody></table></td></tr></tbody></table><table border="0" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" style="background-color: white; border-collapse: collapse; color: #222222; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: small; min-width: 100%; width: 100%px;"><tbody><tr><td style="margin: 0px; padding-top: 9px;" valign="top"><table align="left" border="0" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="m_23558711997229007mcnTextContentContainer" style="border-collapse: collapse; max-width: 100%; min-width: 100%; width: 100%px;"><tbody><tr><td class="m_23558711997229007mcnTextContent" style="color: #202020; font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px 18px 9px; word-break: break-word;" valign="top"><div style="text-align: justify;">Today I am so grateful for the EMCCWP Project RD111 in Pignon, Haiti. For this fall season, schools have remained closed due to instability in the country. When the school does open, parents are afraid to send their children. For example in the city of Gonaives, 2 children in school uniforms were shot on their way to school. Parents also struggle to find cash to pay for uniforms and shoes and food. Yes, school fees and books and backpacks are provided but the children still need to eat. The seeds purchased for the big FGW/Gardens of Faithfulness Training in August have failed to germinate. Well that is the story I am receiving. Is it lack of watering, poor soil and lack of preparing the soil with natural fertilizer. I do not know. There is still the big challenge for the beneficiary families to have "buy in." The good news is that there are members of the community who are very interested and who participated in the 3 day training that was held at the GDN practice farm. <br />Above: <br />At the three day training event in August, there were 80 participants including beneficiary parents and beneficiary students, teachers and community members along with the trainers from Farm Haiti Pignon and Hernso, the lead trainer at GDN. The participants were given further training in how to prepare and manage Gardens of Faithfulness. Everyone greatly appreciated the training. Now, to encourage them to put it into practice at home!<br /> </div></td></tr></tbody></table></td></tr></tbody></table><table border="0" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" style="background-color: white; border-collapse: collapse; color: #222222; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: small; width: 100%px;"><tbody class="m_23558711997229007mcnImageGroupBlockOuter"><tr><td class="m_23558711997229007mcnImageGroupBlockInner" style="margin: 0px; padding: 9px;" valign="top"><table align="left" border="0" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="m_23558711997229007mcnImageGroupContentContainer" style="border-collapse: collapse; width: 273px;"><tbody><tr><td class="m_23558711997229007mcnImageGroupContent" style="margin: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 9px; padding-top: 0px;" valign="top"><img alt="" class="m_23558711997229007mcnImage CToWUd a6T" data-bit="iit" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/proxy/AVvXsEhv8tO7C3bfU8DwXcdsp63fUpFbxYKWSrf_ibZvSa-mSCxU5zdTPbGkArx6EaWMNPPLqHcIdQ4z_GvmS6tWm7QqqT0IVVyavZ3C4fB57iih2lLpb4uzByKQzVWNaPswYxG2aHctxFGEu7vkreFYYLJwTSPMOO7TXwKRIy2T2yf6ZzsRNkpKa_ZxMaKh3iXlIkV1GL_AmcKLc-mYq3RyUQ3NB-yQuA=s0-d-e1-ft" style="border: 0px; cursor: pointer; height: auto; max-width: 768px; outline: none; padding-bottom: 0px; vertical-align: bottom;" tabindex="0" width="264" /></td></tr></tbody></table><table align="right" border="0" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="m_23558711997229007mcnImageGroupContentContainer" style="border-collapse: collapse; width: 273px;"><tbody><tr><td class="m_23558711997229007mcnImageGroupContent" style="margin: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-right: 9px; padding-top: 0px;" valign="top"><img alt="" class="m_23558711997229007mcnImage CToWUd a6T" data-bit="iit" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/proxy/AVvXsEiomRS3ibVvv30v7CmI6jYAsYyyLuJPqZeJWlL2_ecHKwMUKfYeLykC-gWm8aZCsGBHPYkLT1uEJpdWmWXeW6_Yk9ULhb9sQ17_bbabBd0JhgM_FqtCcLwfIXBldtF45pzkAZLXw1osW9uiNqS8fW3HJI5Zh5uZpqp72R5WXVzz7-uloe6DluNDvXA1bKFaXiN0dRQhrwpc2coCLj5_0-zR7zbQxg=s0-d-e1-ft" style="border: 0px; cursor: pointer; height: auto; max-width: 768px; outline: none; padding-bottom: 0px; vertical-align: bottom;" tabindex="0" width="264" /></td></tr></tbody></table></td></tr><tr><td class="m_23558711997229007mcnImageGroupBlockInner" style="margin: 0px; padding: 9px;" valign="top"><table align="left" border="0" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="m_23558711997229007mcnImageGroupContentContainer" style="border-collapse: collapse; width: 273px;"><tbody><tr><td class="m_23558711997229007mcnImageGroupContent" style="margin: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 9px; padding-top: 0px;" valign="top"><img alt="" class="m_23558711997229007mcnImage CToWUd a6T" data-bit="iit" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/proxy/AVvXsEjLuNP29LoV8F-dzvHyM-1o3F_iwbAzz_cdIzAZp-7j1EiwMuZnEhOumqdF4uMCs9t7GKAxIcbL8EgcO0zzcznkQmj3NjhJj0UCyvMhyMqZcLzCcBDg29Fa8zI8kmQao6px4bPmZv6FQtAWybVNPlPF274rplMko0jlRjJjngg4ySsH2LcPON7IBdqgTmFU3pblZDEQcI2OcgvF9f3NYxYEBnqT4Q=s0-d-e1-ft" style="border: 0px; cursor: pointer; height: auto; max-width: 927px; outline: none; padding-bottom: 0px; vertical-align: bottom;" tabindex="0" width="264" /></td></tr></tbody></table><table align="right" border="0" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="m_23558711997229007mcnImageGroupContentContainer" style="border-collapse: collapse; width: 273px;"><tbody><tr><td class="m_23558711997229007mcnImageGroupContent" style="margin: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-right: 9px; padding-top: 0px;" valign="top"><img alt="" class="m_23558711997229007mcnImage CToWUd a6T" data-bit="iit" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/proxy/AVvXsEh1aY3ASyJO-AUdH56jQZ1FN7rRp5xAxjhs6fPdv0LtpcpK9YEJF-sUQ5_ers0cA4ZUaViodzvOc5ytbKyQRubzOYGk97OfoSD3bEddWKkUeNB2oFw7mv2HylNRrkVzMPSpOt3jtqFuIPPvuQMUvuh2RwmAb03vx4hXj578Oxf60zmAibghVul_Oq_eHG9S_-GBFumeck-YGOSpR456KA005Jnq=s0-d-e1-ft" style="border: 0px; cursor: pointer; height: auto; max-width: 768px; outline: none; padding-bottom: 0px; vertical-align: bottom;" tabindex="0" width="264" /></td></tr></tbody></table></td></tr></tbody></table><table border="0" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" style="background-color: white; border-collapse: collapse; color: #222222; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: small; min-width: 100%; width: 100%px;"><tbody><tr><td style="margin: 0px; padding-top: 9px;" valign="top"><table align="left" border="0" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="m_23558711997229007mcnTextContentContainer" style="border-collapse: collapse; max-width: 100%; min-width: 100%; width: 100%px;"><tbody><tr><td class="m_23558711997229007mcnTextContent" style="color: #202020; font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px 18px 9px; word-break: break-word;" valign="top"><div style="text-align: justify;">Above: <br />In early July, Hernso and some of the beneficiary students prepared a small plot of ground using the FGW methods. The problems are legion, and could easily overwhelm us.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Until we sit down for lunch with Abdon and Lumide and work on just what's needed next.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Until we focus on Granme Ophelie and making sure she has her shoes.</div>. <br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Our friend, missionary-pastor Marilyn McIlroy, was able to visit this summer, braving the heat of July and the uncertainties of a first trip back since all the travel shut downs. Our conversation upon her return was full of her heart for these frail folks, trusting God for everything from shoes to stoves to medicines.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">All the seniors are doing much better since arriving at A des V, and for this we are grateful. Need of the pump's final hook up to the available electricity, specific medicines required that are next to impossible to secure there, and the sudden jump in price for the stove are all real needs under the general column of 'asap.' And meanwhile, they persevere. Bravely, lovingly, tenaciously caring for the most vulnerable among the vulnerable.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">There will be more from Highview a bit later into the season where we will be ramping up our fundraising for this project in a bigger way. Right now I would encourage you, if you are led, if you are so inclined, to give what you can through the EMCC's projects page at the link provided <a href="https://www.emcc.ca/world-partners/what-we-do/integrating-development/haiti-seniors/">here</a>.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">It just might buy Granme Ophelie her next pair of shoes.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgkTu-MjZeXzUpmurXsJtAMMta1IM0DQLCtEitIWLBb1io9g6TjMRSNH2c5nQXsS6OGlyfo431kVU3Bxt0Vz8BsOH6P7ntwSgjm1ma2jNwyOxB9o_JBmMZhpDCv-giuy3TxwU_dwgLK-GjniPPVr5_Q9kX7iUUNPByes29FYruSQ7U3UMSifa0jN9S7mA/s1032/view%20from%20the%20dining%20part%20of%20building%20(1).jpeg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="774" data-original-width="1032" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgkTu-MjZeXzUpmurXsJtAMMta1IM0DQLCtEitIWLBb1io9g6TjMRSNH2c5nQXsS6OGlyfo431kVU3Bxt0Vz8BsOH6P7ntwSgjm1ma2jNwyOxB9o_JBmMZhpDCv-giuy3TxwU_dwgLK-GjniPPVr5_Q9kX7iUUNPByes29FYruSQ7U3UMSifa0jN9S7mA/s320/view%20from%20the%20dining%20part%20of%20building%20(1).jpeg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><br /></div>Highview To Haiti!http://www.blogger.com/profile/12907494050434465059noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4462398394490566280.post-88881460253794124652022-04-26T09:53:00.003-04:002023-01-20T09:54:59.743-05:00We Are Delighted to Introduce to You....<p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhDdi8tLalIACqqmL8i1as7bXjzI6YORSc9DP1fgXkK-map7DOWGIUnNwSEjCtspwqwKxi20GypphET3UPwkxiuEYkytmIYrX112a2ScpO2hRBJQeSYGKy4oWhaqbG-VKaCM14G1Jhwz0e4Kg7wKxq3plqTDldoGt88lTFjlhgydstTk_1i8pZiz14nlQ/s887/Residents%20as%20of%2022%2004%2014.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="502" data-original-width="887" height="181" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhDdi8tLalIACqqmL8i1as7bXjzI6YORSc9DP1fgXkK-map7DOWGIUnNwSEjCtspwqwKxi20GypphET3UPwkxiuEYkytmIYrX112a2ScpO2hRBJQeSYGKy4oWhaqbG-VKaCM14G1Jhwz0e4Kg7wKxq3plqTDldoGt88lTFjlhgydstTk_1i8pZiz14nlQ/s320/Residents%20as%20of%2022%2004%2014.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /> <p></p><p>Friends! <p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 0cm;">In 2008 I was part of a team that
headed off to Haiti from Highview Community Church in Kitchener.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 0cm;"><span style="color: black; mso-ascii-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-font-size: 11.0pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-language: EN-CA; mso-hansi-font-family: Calibri;">Had absolutely no idea what to expect
when we arrived. But the first person we were to meet was Pr. Giordani and his
family. We had the privilege of staying with them in their home in the town of
Hinche. This was the start of a very special relationship. </span><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-language: EN-CA;"><o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 0cm;">Since 2008 I and a team from Highview
have travelled to Haiti on a regular basis and on every visit we would make
sure to stop in Hinche to worship at Pr. Giordani’s church and visit our
friends in Sapate (the site of our first building project.) </p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 0cm;">On one occasion Pr. Giordani took me
for a walk on a tour of the church in Hinche, to give me an update on its
ongoing construction. As we took a break to sit down in his office he talked to
me about trust. He mentioned that now that I had been to Haiti on three
occasions (ultimately it would be nine!!) that he and his church could trust
me. They could trust that when I and our team said we cared, we meant it. They
could trust that when we said that we would be back, they believed us. I’ve
never forgotten how meaningful, and challenging, that conversation was in
reminding me that our words and actions, wherever we are, matter so much in
building relationships. </p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 0cm;">Pr. Giordani was a special friend to me
and Highview. I can’t imagine how much he will be missed by his family and his
church in Haiti but I know my heart is hurting because an important piece is
gone. For now!!! </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgoWj2hmuybOmlrZ7LngCeoV1zZRTvFYGTCMxPsqYaFBjZ8rLxSJf79xivAiTlXHNWQnMuT1RNN1Jvn8fEzFcfoUg65WedXRq2SEbjROt11kX-WjyAg1M5YRPIfCE0cBv4ig9NLau13ajuE/s2048/20160609_202516.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1152" data-original-width="2048" height="180" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgoWj2hmuybOmlrZ7LngCeoV1zZRTvFYGTCMxPsqYaFBjZ8rLxSJf79xivAiTlXHNWQnMuT1RNN1Jvn8fEzFcfoUg65WedXRq2SEbjROt11kX-WjyAg1M5YRPIfCE0cBv4ig9NLau13ajuE/s320/20160609_202516.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 0cm;"><b><span style="background: white; font-size: 12pt;">We grieve, but not as

<p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 0cm;"><span style="background-color: white; font-size: 12pt;">As we make our honest
way through the difficult, ponderous realities of life, we do not in any way

have opened our hearts to love and be loved, know and be known even in Regions

<p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 0cm;"><span style="background-color: white; font-size: 12pt;">Bottom line remains,
however.</span><span style="font-size: 12pt;"> </span><span style="background-color: white; font-size: 12pt;">This life begs an epic sequel,

But this small visible above-ground end of a very long below-ground pipe makes us very, very happy.</p><p>It's the capped off end of the well for our Senior's Home in Pignon, Haiti.</p><p>The story of our engagement with the Senior's Home is longer even than the whole of the pipe, with several Teams by now, from both Highview and Trinity EMC,</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg11-azbEQ8Et032cnXrNfOlzO9do9kmZ2YNCFyTm3IYxyj2KXP-qTLThyphenhyphenKpfDnjERaBO6RwQnSdkTxqV0OMMkAY2BUoHi3Q99qg-3WJGLFol_lxG4LaQ8AmqukdahlMaGfMRNxE3AvjJaG/s320/Well+5.jpeg" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="320" data-original-width="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg11-azbEQ8Et032cnXrNfOlzO9do9kmZ2YNCFyTm3IYxyj2KXP-qTLThyphenhyphenKpfDnjERaBO6RwQnSdkTxqV0OMMkAY2BUoHi3Q99qg-3WJGLFol_lxG4LaQ8AmqukdahlMaGfMRNxE3AvjJaG/s0/Well+5.jpeg" /></a></div><p>having been part of the ongoing construction, first of the wall, and then of the residence itself. The idea has been to partner with a church in Haiti to develop a property that would ultimately serve as a safe place for seniors there who have no family or other means by which they could be cared for in their later years.</p><p>Patience and perseverance have paid off, and we are now in the last stages of set up, preparing for our residents to move in, in the months to come. Beds and mattresses, tables and chairs, and the all-important water system that will connect this very important pipe to the rest of the facility, are now in the works. As well, appropriate staffing is being lined up, all so we can welcome precious Grammas and Grampas into their new home.</p><p>Our partnership now has new opportunities to be involved in ongoing care of the Residents themselves. Respectful, culturally sensitive conversations have begun to map out a way we might come alongside Pastor Abdon and his wife Se Lumide to provide for the ongoing needs of food and medicine, and all that would bring quality of life. </p><p>As those plan become clearer, we will invite all who are interested and impassioned to be part of these next steps. God's heart is always to bring the lonely into families. It's exciting to be at the brink of watching Him do it again.</p><p>Of course, everyone who's been there, and even some of us who haven't, are waiting for the right time to visit in person. As those plans come into focus as well, we will certainly let you know. Who knows, you may end up washing some dishes or laundry using water from this very well.</p><p>In the meantime, any and all donations for Haiti can still be made through Highview's online giving link at <a href="https://hcckw.churchcenter.com/giving">https://hcckw.churchcenter.com/giving</a>.</p><p>Thanks so much for your ongoing prayers and love.</p><p>In a world turned upside down by a pandemic, love brings back the balance.</p><p><br /></p>Highview To Haiti!http://www.blogger.com/profile/12907494050434465059noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4462398394490566280.post-9700632098004201752020-10-23T13:30:00.000-04:002020-10-23T13:30:08.598-04:00Continuing the Work in Strange Times<p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjRGC_-IPS00bEE4X_6cHfPA22B2NpqCzGESCk33cehsgnskSnxBCW-lbZ4oJQGy4T1Y1K9hBzFuXq72Fnop0RRMdWxBn8kTk2D7iTODuP64KaW35orDFGWDALKRccu4ZKIAmNDcgD__a7Y/s960/Marylin+with+blankets.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="720" data-original-width="960" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjRGC_-IPS00bEE4X_6cHfPA22B2NpqCzGESCk33cehsgnskSnxBCW-lbZ4oJQGy4T1Y1K9hBzFuXq72Fnop0RRMdWxBn8kTk2D7iTODuP64KaW35orDFGWDALKRccu4ZKIAmNDcgD__a7Y/s320/Marylin+with+blankets.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /> <p></p><p>Just a quick hello to keep us all on board and up to speed on the ways God is continuing to work among our Haitian friends.</p><p>As many of you know, Marilyn McIlroy is our steady connection between Highview and all things Haitian. This seems particularly true when the world is in the midst of a pandemic AND it's hurricane season. Then, it seems even more true when Haiti is involved, and there are people and places we love being affected in ways we can't even imagine.</p><p>I'm glad for the news and all the ways we are connected, because, not only do we hear about the hard stuff, we can know the beautiful, redemptive things God is doing, as we stay connected in meaningful ways.</p><p>Our beautiful friend Marilyn McIlroy's <a href="https://whereintheworldismarilyn.com/">BLOG</a> "Where In the World Is Marilyn?" will not only help provide us with some information, but can keep our hearts in touch with how we can pray and support our partners in Haiti.</p><p>In her email to me this week she reports:</p><p>"We are excited to say that the Senior's Retirement Home is continuing to progress. The remainder of the finances that were raised last year were sent to Pastor Abdon in Pignon, to move along the parging, the painting, more sidewalks and ceilings, and many more details in the second section of the building.</p><p>'The hurricane on the weekend did not really affect the Pignon area. [Praise God!]</p><p>'Early August, children had already returned to school in areas where school were not able to provide study material due to the Covid shutdown. The pan is to complete the studies missed from March through June. Then the new school year will commence later in the fall."</p><p>So -- good things to celebrate and be grateful for!!!</p><p>Thank you everyone who continue to pray for and otherwise support the important work God is doing in Haiti. While we may struggle a bit with our lack of ability to plan and proceed the way we normally do through this coming ministry season (no trips planned, what about our Haiti Dinner?), we serve a God who is intimately involved in lives, and Who's plans cannot be thwarted.</p><p><br /></p><p><br /></p>Highview To Haiti!http://www.blogger.com/profile/12907494050434465059noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4462398394490566280.post-77348716636160439862020-06-11T08:00:00.001-04:002020-06-11T08:00:02.518-04:00Haitian Covid Situation Update from Marilyn McIlroy<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
